Proper application of an adhesive-backed foam is critical in ensuring a strong, lasting bond between the foam and the substrate upon which it is being adhered. This can be easily performed by following these steps.

  1. Clean the substrate – Any particles on the surface will create regions where the adhesive cannot create a bond between the two materials. If any liquids are used in this cleaning, ensure the surface is dried.
  2. Ensure the surface is fully prepared for the application of the adhesive as some adhesives are very aggressive with a short tack time.
  3. Application of the foam – The adhesive is pressure sensitive and requires some force to fully adhere it to the surface. This can either be done by hand or with a small roller like a paint roller, but the entire surface needs to have pressure applied to allow the adhesive to fully activate. Take note to ensure the corners are pressed upon all the way to the edges to prevent any peel-back.
  4. Special surfaces – Some surfaces don’t bond well with the adhesive. Any surface that is made to prevent materials from sticking to it can be an issue, for example, powder coat paint, Teflon, or silicon. On these surfaces, a primer can be used to improve the bonding face. Alternatively, removal of the coating or sanding the surface may be necessary to create a better face for a strong bond.

Lastly, the suggested minimum application temperature is 60°F. Below this point the bond will not set as well.
